About Hyperice

To get started, let’s learn a little bit more about Hyperice, the company that manufacturers Hypervolt and Hypervolt Plus.

Hyperice is based in Irvine, California. The company has been around since 2010, and has built a solid reputation over that time as a provider of high quality products to enhance recovery and movement.

The company writes, “We believe the quality of life is intimately connected to movement. Whether you’re an elite athlete, a fitness enthusiast, or seeking a healthier lifestyle, the way you move determines the way you feel. Our devices allow you to move better, so you can feel your absolute best.”

They add, “Hyperice connects the innovation of technology to the art of movement. Our products are designed with a synthesis of science and physiology to support and advance the human condition.”

Hypervolt: The Original

Hyperice refers to its original Hypervolt as “the game changer,” explaining, “The first percussion massage device to deliver so much power so quietly, the original Hypervolt changed the game for premium percussion devices worldwide.”

Hypervolt Plus: More Power, More Battery Life

The Hypervolt Plus is the next level up in the Hypervolt line. You will discover that in most respects, it is actually pretty similar to the original Hypervolt.

Nevertheless, it does boast a more powerful motor as well as longer battery life.

How Do Dimensions, Weight, Construction and Design Compare?

The Hypervolt Plus is a little bit heavier than the original Hypervolt—3 pounds versus 2.5 pounds.

As for dimensions, we had to do a little extra research, but these were the dimensions we found listed on the respective sales pages for these products at a retailer:

  • Hypervolt: 10 x 7 x 2.5 inches
  • Hypervolt Plus: 10 x 6.5 x 2.5 inches

So, despite being heavier than the original, the Plus model actually is apparently a tad smaller. It is not really a noticeable difference, however.

The materials we found listed for the Hypervolt original were “ABS plastic/aluminum/nylon.” All we saw listed for the Hypervolt Plus was “plastic” (though that does not necessarily mean that is the only material used in its construction).

Appearance-wise, the designs are almost interchangeable, except that the original product was black and silver, and the Plus product is black.

So, we would say that the most important difference with respect to construction is the weight between the two guns.

If you will be using the gun on yourself, or if you will be using it for extended periods of time, you might actually prefer the lighter-weight product, which is the original Hypervolt.

But the downsides are that you would have less power available and shorter battery life as well (see below).

Both percussive therapy guns feature a brushless high-torque motor. But the motor for the original Hypervolt is 60 W. For the Hypervolt Plus, it is 90 W.

This is probably the single most important differentiating factor between the two guns. If you need more power, you will get significantly better performance from the Hypervolt Plus.

The Hypervolt Plus is also the clear winner with respect to battery life. The same 24 V rechargeable lithium-ion battery powers both devices. But a single charge gives you only two hours of battery life for the original product. For the Plus, you get 2 ½ hours of battery life per charge.

That extra half hour can make a big difference. So, for longer sessions, the Plus is the better buy.

Amplitude, Force, Depth, and Speeds

Hyperice is not informative about the amplitude, force or depth for its products, but it does offer some information about speeds.

The speed settings for Hypervolt are as follows:

  • Level 1: 30 Hz / 2,400 PPM
  • Level 2: 40 Hz / 2,800 PPM
  • Level 3: 53 Hz /3,200 PPM

The speed settings for Hypervolt Plus are:

  • Level 1: 30 Hz / 2,400 PPM
  • Level 2: 40 Hz / 2,800 PPM
  • Level 3: 53 Hz /3,200 PPM

In short, the speed settings available are identical between the two products.

Both products are also equipped with 3 levels of Hyperice Pressure Sensor Technology™.

Which is Quieter, Hypervolt or Hypervolt Plus?

Neither the Hypervolt nor the Hypervolt Plus are particularly quiet.

  • Hypervolt: 79 decibels
  • Hypervolt Plus: 81 decibels

By contrast, the most recent line of Theragun percussive therapy guns features 60-65 decibels.

For a little context, in the past, therapy guns usually were around 100 decibels in volume.

So, Hypervolt and Hypervolt Plus are a major improvement compared to earlier devices, but leave a lot to be desired in the decibels department in comparison to competing products by Therabody.

To provide even more context, 60 decibels is around the volume level of an electric toothbrush.

80 decibels, on the other hand, is noisier than a vacuum cleaner, which HealthLinkBC says is 75 decibels or so.

The site lists examples in the 80-89 bracket such as “Heavy traffic, window air conditioner, noisy restaurant, power lawn mower.”

According to this site, “sounds above 85 are harmful, depending on how long and how often you are exposed to them and whether you wear hearing protection, such as earplugs or earmuffs.”

So, Hypervolt and Hypervolt Plus, while obnoxiously loud, at least are within the safe range.

That was not true of other therapy guns in the past that were 100 decibels or more.

Still, we would probably recommend wearing earplugs for your own comfort if you will be running the therapy gun for a long time on end.

While the Hypervolt is marginally quieter than the Hypervolt Plus, 79 decibels versus 81 decibels really is not going to make a huge difference. So, we would not use this as a consideration when deciding which appliance to get.

Of course, if 79-81 decibels sounds a bit overwhelming for your eardrums, you can always check out our articles discussing Theragun therapy guns. You might find they are a better fit for your needs.

Ease-of-Use Comparison for Hypervolt vs. Hypervolt Plus

Both Hypervolt and Hypervolt Plus feature a set of LED indicator lights which let you know the power level you have selected. You can change your settings with the push of a button.

It might have been nice for either or both of these products to include an actual screen for settings selections. But the LED indicator lights are at least simple and straightforward. Plus, the smart features mean you can basically use your smartphone in place of a built-in screen.

Both Hypervolt and Hypervolt Plus are Bluetooth®-enabled devices, which means that you can connect them with your smartphone. Hyperice offers the HyperSmartTM app, allowing you to set up your percussion therapy gun for guided routines with automatic speed adjustments along the way.

Attachments, Parts, and Accessories

Whether you purchase the Hypervolt or you get the Hypervolt Plus, you will get the same set of accessories with your purchase:

  • AC cable and 24 V charger
  • Head attachments: Fork, Ball, Cushion, Flat, Bullet
  • Head attachment pouch

So, included attachments and accessories also are not a deciding factor in choosing which of the two products to purchase. Around 5 attachments is also pretty standard in the industry, so it should give you plenty to work with.

The same optional accessories are also available for each. You can upgrade from the included AC cable and 24 V charger to the Hypervolt Charging Base if you find it more convenient. You can also purchase a new Hypervolt Battery if you need to replace the one that comes with your therapy gun.

The case for the therapy gun is also listed as and add-on accessory. We find this a bit unclear since the case is pictured in the image with the accessories with the heading “What’s Included.” So, this is something that you might want to clarify with the manufacturer before you purchase either of the products.

How Do the Warranties Compare?

Both products are protected under the same general warranty that Hyperice offers. The company writes, “Hyperice has a one year manufacturer’s warranty! If within one year from the date of purchase, this product fails due to a defect in material or workmanship, Hyperice Inc. will repair or replace the product, or necessary components, free of charge!” Exclusions are listed on that page.

Frankly, we really appreciate that the battery is replaceable for both of these therapy guns. That is not the case for all therapy guns on the market, and it gives customers one less thing to worry about with respect to what could go wrong outside of warranty.

What Are Customers Saying About Hypervolt and Hypervolt Plus?

Before we can talk about pricing and value, we should take a look at customer reviews to see what real-life buyers think about Hypervolt and Hypervolt Plus.

Based on our research, customers have pretty similar experiences regardless of which of the two products they purchase.

In both cases, customers on the whole seem to be very happy with the overall performance of their therapy guns. They say that they do a great job getting deep into the tissue and providing an effective massage.

Most of the complaints in both cases all came down to the same thing. Reportedly, the therapy gun would perform great for a while, and then would suddenly stop working. Sometimes, this would happen in warranty. Other times, it would happen out of warranty.

So, it appears there may be quality control issues that broadly affect Hyperice therapy gun products. But they do not seem to be specific to any one model.

But we can also say that when these therapy guns work, they seem to do a great job.

Notably, we did not find any complaints about the added weight of the Hypervolt Plus, nor the lower power of the original Hypervolt.

This either indicates that both products are roughly equivalent in terms of how satisfactory they are, or that buyers just tend to do a pretty good at selecting what is most appropriate for their needs.

Pricing and Value: Which Product Offers More Bang for Your Buck?

Now that we have taken some time to find out what real life buyers are saying about Hypervolt and Hypervolt Plus, we can talk about pricing and value for both products.

The price difference between the two is significant, although not massive.

Nevertheless, it is one of the most notable differences. Again, the others basically come down to:

The Hypervolt Plus is more powerful than the original Hypervolt.
The Hypervolt Plus weighs more than the original Hypervolt.
The Hypervolt Plus’s battery life is a bit longer than the original Hypervolt’s battery life.
The original Hypervolt is just a tad quieter than the Hypervolt Plus.

Aside from the above, the two products are almost interchangeable. With that in mind, we could say that the improvements with respect to battery life and power may be sufficient to justify the higher price tag for the Hypervolt Plus, but only if you really need those improvements.

Otherwise, you are probably better off simply going with the original Hypervolt, since it is lighter-weight and also costs less than the Hypervolt Plus.

Which Hyperice Massage Therapy Gun Should You Buy?
